Unit #3 (Mesopotamia) Reflection

a) The domestication of plants and animals

As I have mentioned in my previous post, people began domesticating animals and plants after they had settled, experimented and learned that it would be easier to keep the things that they needed closer to their homes. domestication of animals and plants caused them to have more of what the humans needed, (for example wool) but also made them dependent on the people not being able to survive in the wild by themselves. Domestication in general cause humans to control the lives of plants and animals.

b) The transition from hunter-gatherer communities to the first civilizations

About 10,000 BC the nomadic humans travelling around the world started realizing that if a place was rich in food and fresh water, it was easier to settle their for a longer time rather than to go on to another place. After they had settled, they started discovering and experimenting with the nature, discovering that they could keep some animals and plants closer to their home, beginning a farming lifestyle. When the people had started farming, they had a more stable and reliable food source which allowed  for surplus of food which then led to people having more time to specialized on activities which then led to the sprouts of civilizations.

c) Early religion and beliefs

When people enough time to specialize on less important jobs, first priests started to appear. These priests offered answers to why different unexplainable things were happening and the people accepted this as there was no-one else capable of giving them an answer. As religion grew, priests had more and more power and even ruled cities at a certain point but then the rule was taken away from them by strong military leaders which then became kings.

2. Imagine someone saying to you, "Learning about the Sumerians isn't very
important since they're long gone!" What would you tell them in order to change their mind?

It is important because the Sumerians had invented the wheel. Also, the Sumerians had made large developments in the areas of language, literature, and culture. Their development in culture b9included their early religion which was the base for many latter religions that were yet to come. They were also one of the first civilizations ever. On top of that they also had the first author ever, which was a female.
