Past to Present: How do natural features such as rivers, lakes, and mountains help unite people or keep them isolated from each other?


When people live in the same area, they tend to have the same problems. When they all have the same problem that they have to solve, they are more likely to cooperate and as a result both solve it more efficiently. For example, if the region gets floods annually, all of the people are effected, and therefore all of the people want to solve the problem. Because of that, they are more likely to all cooperate on for example building dams, canals and irrigation systems. This is helpful for the society as a whole and it also strengthens the bonds between the peoples.

These landforms could also separate people. For example if a large river or mountain rage lies between the two peoples, then the two peoples are less likely to communicate with each other and therefore no or only weak bonds are made. On the other hand, the two communities could cooperate on creating a way to travel through those harsh lands and again the bonds would be strengthened,
